The Silence Is the Real Answer, The Sales Index Card Test™

April 1, 2026  |  Chuck Kitchen, Founder GENREV!™

For 25 years, handing salespeople a blank 3x5 index card for the Sales Index Card Test™ and asking five simple questions has been a revealing exercise:

  1. What is your name?
  2. What is your forecast?
  3. Where are you relative to forecast?
  4. List your top 10 accounts.
  5. List 2 things you are doing to support your company’s goals.

No CRM. No slide deck. Just what is in their heads. The premise is that a professional should be able to answer the last four as easily as the first one, their own name. A short video introducing the original Sales Index Card Test™ is available here.

Today, knowing your numbers is just the baseline. Internal alignment is the floor, not the ceiling. The real question is whether your team understands the customer’s business as well as they understand their own forecast.

The game has changed enough to require a second card.

Sales Index Card Test™ II: Asset or Administration?

If you want to know whether your team is providing true movement, hand them a second blank card and ask:

  1. If you stopped calling on your top customers tomorrow, what happens to those sales over the next 12–24 months?
  2. What is the #1 challenge a key customer has that you can help solve?
  3. When thinking about current opportunities, which ones are you actively pursuing to convert now, and how?
  4. What hope in your current forecast can you turn into certainty?

The Uncomfortable Truth: Most sales leaders assume their team would pass this test. In practice, the silence is the real answer.

When a salesperson can’t answer these, the immediate instinct is to blame the individual. But more often, it is a failure of leadership to give them the right framework to succeed. If your team can’t distinguish hope from certainty, or if they aren’t actively pursuing conversions with a clear “how”, they are simply maintaining the status quo.

Management has a responsibility to ensure salespeople are spending their time on the activities that actually build a business.

Question: Are you managing and supporting your people to provide movement?
